Bangladesh is a South Asian country located to the east of India.

Capital is Dhaka.

Official language is Bengali.

Population, 169,312,988. Size, 148,460 km^2.

Currency is the Bangladeshi Taka (BDT).

The majority of the Bangladeshi population identifies as Muslim (89.1%), while the second largest religious group is Hinduism (10.0%). A remaining 0.9% of the population identifies with some other religion (including Buddhism and Christianity).

Major cities include Chittagong, Khulna, and Rangpur City.

Ilish macher paturi is the national dish of Bangladesh. It is made with ilish fish that has been marinated with ground spices before it's wrapped in banana leaves and steamed or roasted. Bangladesh is a renowned tea-producing country, and it’s rated among the top 10 largest tea producers globally. According to a report by Transparency International in 2020, Bangladesh ranked 26th out of 180 countries in the Corruption Perception Index. The public sector and government are known to be heavily corrupt. The rich vegetarian diet means that it is one of the least obese countries globally. It’s the 2nd country in the world after Vietnam with the least level of adult obesity. The locals seldom smile, not because they are generally unfriendly, but it’s considered a sign of immaturity if you smile too much. Bangladesh is known to have some of the best philosophers, sages, innovators, and authors in modern times. In South Asia, Bangladesh is the country with the highest level of gender equality. It ranks third in South Asia in peacefulness and life expectancy.
